NOTES:
** Your child has sight word homework this week. Their sight words and sentences can be found on the back of their behavior chart. Please review those nightly. They can also be found on their Google classroom in a daily Slides presentation for extra help in practicing!

**Please make sure your child is reading their AR books nightly. They should be at 100% of their goal by Friday. All goals must be met by Friday, October 2. Your child should be reading the book to your first. If they have words that they struggle with please help them to break down the word using the phonics rules, and by remembering their sight words. You can read the book to your child after they read the book to you. The main goal in 1st grade is to have your child do as much of the reading as possible! We are really working to build fluency. ALL STUDENTS WHO MEET THEIR GOAL WILL RECEIVE A DRINK AND POPCORN REWARD!

**All submitted assignments from last week have been graded and returned to your child. Most assignments are being completed together, right now. As the year progresses, these assignments will become more independent. We are really working to understand how to access assignments in Google classroom, how to type in text boxes, submit assignments, etc. Please take a look at what your child is accomplishing! I am so proud of how they have jumped in and tackled their work this year. Our hope is that if we were to have to transition to NTI it would be a smooth transition for all students and parents!

** Please remember to send a water bottle with your child to refill each day. They can leave it at school, or bring a new one each day. These are especially important on PE days, as we cannot use the water fountains.

NOTES: ** Your child has sight word homework this week. Their sight words and sentences can be found on the back of their behavior chart. Please review those nightly. They can also be found on their Google classroom in a daily Slides presentation for extra help in practicing! **Your child took the STAR Reading and Math test last week.  Their reading level can be found in their AR Book bag. This year we will be checking out 2 books at a time. Your child will be reading on their own schedule, not on assigned days.  When reading, your child needs to be the one doing the reading. PLEASE DO NOT READ THE BOOK TO YOUR CHILD FIRST! Have them read the book first, then you may re-read the book to them and discuss it. Your child should read the book 2-3 times before taking a test to ensure that they can keep their quiz average above a 90%.
When they are ready to take a test, please write the title of the book on their recording sheet located in their book bag. After taking their test, they will write down their score along with their cumulative total of points for this 9 weeks. The 9 weeks will end at fall break, so your child needs to meet their AR goal before then; we have taken the shortened time period into account when setting goals for this quarter. **
In your child’s folder you will find a school picture order form. LifeTouch Photography will be taking pictures this year. Picture day will be on Tuesday, September 8. If you would like to go ahead and return the order form along with money I will keep that until picture day here at school. **This week in class we are working on an All About Me project on your child’s Google Classroom page. They are using Google slides to create a virtual poster all about themselves. These are going to be awesome! If you want you can login and take a look as we are working throughout the week, just be sure not to help at home as we will be doing a little bit each day in class. **Important Days: -September 7: NO SCHOOL, Labor Day -September 8: Picture Day

First Day Note August 26, 2020 Today was a great first day! I will upload pictures to our class blog from our first week by Friday afternoon. My blog/webpage can be found at http://www.sduren.blogspot.com. I will also post weekly notes on this page, as well as in your child’s Google classroom.  Google classroom can be accessed using the login card you received at Back to School night. Just go to www.google.com and use the login information on the card. If you need assistance with this please let me know.  If your child is going to be a car rider, our car line workers are asking that you display a sign on your dash with your child’s first and last name to help them learn the cars associated with each child at the beginning of the year.  There will be no school on Monday, September 7 as we will be observing Labor Day. Tuesday, September 8 will be school picture day! Be sure to bring your brightest smile! We will send home information soon about packages available for purchase.  Please make sure your child has a clean mask each day for school, as well as an extra in their backpack. We never know when an accident might happen and they will need a clean mask. We will just leave the clean mask in their backpack for emergencies all year.  Due to updated guidance, the cafeteria is not allowed to handle cash or checks at this time, so you will need to open an account in My School Bucks for any extras your child may want to purchase.  This is not required, but is necessary for the purchase of extra food or snacks. https://www.myschoolbucks.com/ver2/getmain?requestAction=home Our water fountains cannot be used this year, and we recommend that each student bring a water bottle to school. These can be sent and left at school, or brought daily. Students will be allowed to refill these in the classroom from the sink, and we will eventually have water bottle refill stations installed throughout the school. Students will only have the water they bring to drink when going to PE on Wednesday and Friday. Reusable water bottles or packaged pre-bottled water are both great options (we can always refill a Deerpark or Dasani bottle as needed).
